Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's advisor on strategic communications. In her role as the White House's Strategic Communications Advisor, Mercedes Schlapp is faced with multiple issues. The president is the director of his own communications. Numerous legal issues which could impact messaging strategies. And Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective problems. Schlapp is, however, never lost focus on her mission. She is in close contact with White House political affairs and the legislative team as well as policy shops and the overall communications operation in order to ensure that the policies are implemented. Her focus to date has been on topics such as safety in schools, the opioid epidemic, infrastructure, trade, as well as other topics. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters often in her current position. The media attention she received during March was when she was named one of the contenders to succeed Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a good position as White House strategist communications advisor. Mercedes Schlapp has to deal with an administration plagued by various issues, including a president acting as the president's own communications director as well as Cabinet Secretaries that are caught up in the controversies surrounding their respective departments. Schlapp has been keeping an eye at the end of the tunnel, working on policy implementation together with White House staff from the political and legislative affairs team and policy shop and broader communications. To date, her focus is on issues like security in schools as well as the opioid epidemic trade, infrastructure as well as other topics. Schlapp's current job doesn't involve many interactions with reporters.
